1995 - A record 65,462 acres were defoliated. The fungus disease, Entomophaga maimaiga. Appeared in the caterpillars at their later growth stage, when they do most of their feeding.
1996 – 534 acres were noticeably defoliated. The fungus disease, Entomophaga maimaiga was able to rapidly spread and infect caterpillars at an earlier stage of development.
1997 – no moderate to heavy defoliation
The dramatic drop in wooded acres defoliated by the gypsy moth was due to the fungus disease, Entomophaga maimaiga.
